In Search of Good Biryani in Islamabad

Biryani is a national love. The dish is popular among majority of the people and it has a separate fan base settled in Karachi. The blend of spices in the dish is mouth watering and irresistible. It is always one of the most in demand item and always on the menu of majority of the desi restaurants and dhabas. If you are searching for a casual eat out during office lunch break, University lunch time or to satisfy random cravings, biryani is one of the most popular dish to cater your hunger.

There are many types of biryanis. There is Sindhi Biryani, Bombay Biryani, Chicken Biryani, Beef Biryani and further innovations in the dish include tikka and even zinger biryani but the last two ideas are not as much appealing as the desi biryani. In Karachi, biryani is an obsession because many competitors are offering delicious prices at affordable price and filling quantities. The dish is so much in demand that it makes some ordinary local restaurant such as Farhan Biryani in Gulistan e Jauhar, popular. If you ever visit, the social media group named SWOT ANALYSIS of food places in Karachi then the reviews for biryani are endless!

Coming from such a hot and crazy background for biryani, I myself am a food lover. I am a fan of biryani more than anything and immediately, as a tenant in Islamabad my first quest started by pledging to try all local restaurants, even dhabas in search of a tasty, desi style biryani. Believe me, the people of Islamabad have serious crisis of biryani here! That is, they have biryani outlets but perhaps the spicy blend that we Karachietes are accustomed to, is missing. Since, as a newbee here, trying all eat out and fine dining experience is the highlight of most of the weekends here, the quest for finding a perfect biryani to satisfy fully the biryani cravings is still ongoing.

So far, there is beef or chicken biryani in the menu of different local restaurants but the best restaurant for biryani in Islamabad is yet to be discovered. Any update in the quest is going to be published. So far, one of the local restaurant that came close to meeting the biryani taste quest that is desirable is the WAH BIRYANI. It is a local restaurant that is located near Jinnah Avenue in Islamabad. It is not specifically a restaurant that serves just biryani or variants of the dish. Their positioning is based on many desi items including bbq, karhai and even fast food so, it was very hard to determine the specialty of this restaurant.

As for biryani, they offer only chicken biryani or sada biryani. In addition, much to my surprise there is a kebab biryani. Kebab biryani is served with biryani rice and two pieces of shami kebab with raita on the side. However, that seems like somewhat copy of savour food's pulao meal deals and did not sound very appealing. Reluctantly, we ordered a takeaway of single chicken biryani.

The service of Wah Biryani was a bit lethargic as the servers were busy in chitchat until it was reminded to them that the order for single biryani is a takeaway and urgent. The biryani takeaway was served in a felt bag therefore, the ecological consideration of the restaurant is a plus point. Although federal regulation also binds the retailers to not use plastic bags. Anyways, the serving was enough for one person. It had yogurt with it which was too thin to be used so I discarded that immediately.

Opening the biryani box, frankly, speaking there were less expectations for the taste. The first bite of biryani however, changed the opinion. The spices used in the biryani were actually giving the taste unlike many others which were previously tried that give a bland taste to the dish. Finally, I had a biryani that was more than just colored yellow rice and chicken. There was a semblance of biryani spices, and it was the first win to my quest of finding best biryani in Islamabad.

Well, WAH BIRYANI is not certainly a must have nor it is the best biryani in Islamabad however, it does have a better taste than many locally served biryanis.
